Dr Katie Liston

Katie is a senior lecturer in the social sciences of sport at Ulster University, Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Athena Swan champion of the School of Sport and Exercise Science, Fellow of the Norbert Elias Foundation and a member of SHE at TUS. Katie’s doctoral thesis was the first to examine women’s sports in Ireland and she has published extensively in this research space, on topics such as gender equality and integration, governance and leadership, women in media-sport, women’s sports migration and sports policy, honour and shame attributed to women in sport, the management of pain and injury in women’s sports, and sexism/anti-feminine slurs in social media coverage. Katie is also a former elite athlete with national and international honours in athletics, Gaelic football, rugby and soccer. Katie has acted as an adviser to national sports bodies on the design and content of leadership and mentorship programmes for women, gender equality, the management of online hate and gaps in safeguarding provision. She is also a regular contributor to national media/broadcasters.

Dr. Niamh Kitching
Dr. Niamh Kitching is a Lecturer in physical education at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick, Ireland. She teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in physical education and wellbeing education. Her research interests include the sociology of sport and PE, sports pedagogy and coaching, and sports media. Her published research focuses on gender equality and sport, with a particular emphasis on the experiences of children in sport, along with professional women athletes, coaches, and fans and their presence, participation and presentation in sport and sports media. She has published in a number of sociology of sport journals and collections.
