The míde research consortium successfully launched their flagship mentoring programme at a pre conference event on February 26th. The launch was marked by a mentoring workshop with Eliza Downey from Jo Hopkins Consultancy and was attended by 10 mentors and 10 mentees participating in the programme as well as many other interested senior, mid and early career researchers. This initiative is funded by the HEA through the theme of Enhancing the Role of Males as ‘Champions of Change’ in and through Sport and ultimately aims to foster cross-institutional collaboration, gender equity awareness, and leadership development among early career academics.

Prior to the event, mentors and mentees had applied to participate in the programme - there were 20 expressions of interest from senior academics across the discipline of sport and exercise science and 10 from PhD students recruited through the míde PGR group. Applications were screened by the project team and mentors and mentees matched based on the expressed areas of development of mentees and skillsets of mentors. In all, the the programme has 15 matched pairs with 10 in attendance at the launch event.

Eliza's workshop led the group through some basics of mentoring with several opportunities to put Eliza's message into practice through role play and group work. This was followed by a live mentoring experience facilitated by míde connect through Dr Lizzy Deery. As the mentoring process takes off over the coming weeks, all participants have completed an initial baseline submission that will inform the overall evaluation of the initiative. A great start!
